I’m Tux, a six year old, fifteen pound Havanese.
My mom, Joanne, says the story of my name is that upon seeing my dark coat and white chest, my dad proclaimed that I looked like I was wearing a tuxedo, and the name Tux stuck!
I have also been called a dapper dog, probably because I have over 40 bow ties -and counting! I like to wear bow ties that relate to the places that I visit as it’s a great way to connect with people.
I have been part of a therapy dog team with my mom for two years and in that time I have enjoyed a variety of different experiences. From greeting fans at a Jets game to (my favourite)visits with students and seniors, I’ve made a lot of new friends along the way.
My path to becoming a therapy dog started when I was just a puppy. One day while out for a walk, I met a boy who was afraid of dogs. My friendly smile and wagging tail convinced him to pet me. That led to us sitting quietly in the grass along the boulevard for a while. When it was time to go he whispered to me “I love you, softie”and that made me smile even bigger!
Mom started to see that I had a lot of patience and was extremely gentle, especially with nervous people. One day she took me for a test to be a therapy dog and you guessed it- I passed and we started volunteering right away.
By the way, I know when it’s time to volunteer because I get to wear my special vest-it is so exciting!
I have taken courses with Training Loyal Companions and Dumbledogs for Puppy Manners, Leash Manners and Recall, Brain Games and Impulse Control , Calm K9 and Canine Good Neighbour, to name a few.
When not volunteering, I love adventures with my brother Too, playing soccer and snacking on sweet potatoes.
One lesser known fact about me is that I absolutely love elevators. Having visited many offices and other venues, I realized that elevators lead to more people to meet!
My mom says I get a little too distracted by elevators at times but hey, you can’t blame me for wanting to make sure that I’ve said hello to everyone!
I can’t wait to meet you!
